Nemea
Pedrali - 2015

Remote future.

Nemea is the name of a city in Corinthia, in Greece, also known as Eraclea, in honor of Hercules who faced one of his twelve labors here, defeating the legendary lion. Sporting competitions were held in this location, similar to the more well-known Olympia games, in which the athletes ran naked. Even the Nemea chair is naked, the aluminum structure that can be glimpsed is nothing but a bone, and its tapered legs seem muscle spindles inclined in a dynamic impetus, leant for the sprint!

The anthropic chair.

Nemea is an armchair made up of three groups of components: the aluminum of the frame, the tapered ash wood of the legs and the plywood of the seat and backrest. These components, however uneven in the materials, are joined together organically, as would the different tissues of a living being, seamlessly. The unity of the parts responds to the function in a natural way, supporting the human figure with the ergonomic design of the bodies and presenting a rational use of material in the supporting structures.

Hang over solution.

The armrest and the backrest of the Nemea armchair are both obtained togheter from a cut of a plywood shell. Two functions in a single multilayer component, simple to manufacture and very light. In addition, the overhang of the appendix that acts as an armrest can be used to lift the armchair from the ground, suspending it on the table top, to facilitate floor cleaning. The sinuous line that connects the armrest to the backrest is once again a reminiscence of Greek art, mentioning the curves of the armrests of the ancient theater of Epidaurus.

The fluid shape.

All the structural components become thinner where lightness is needed and thicken where resistance is needed. The aluminum frame, emptied and cross-linked in the hidden side, is connected to distribute the stresses evenly. The junction between the legs and the back also occurs naturally: the turning of the legs forms a bulb, which increases the surface of contact with the plywood, and increases the volume necessary for the connection.

Design the process.

An industrial designer focuses the attention of the project on the production process even before on the product. This is to ensure that objects are the result of a fair, logical process in which materials and energy are used in a respectful way.

Nemea was born from a reflection on the typical assembly methods of wooden chairs, in particular on the irreversibility and timing of gluing. We wanted to solve all the structural complications with a single die-cast aluminum component, to which it was possible to give articulated shapes in space. The various wooden components are assembled mechanically to this basic element. This facilitates the management of the components, the storage and the disposal of the chair, which is thus entirely recyclable.

Cronide di Capo Artemisio: someone says it is Neptune brandishing the trident, others Zeus with the thunderbolt. Posturological experts say that he is actually lifting a Nemea armchair by the arm, to show off with the Maenads.
