Coney
Pedrali - 2025

Stay in chairfulness.
Coney is a collection of monomaterial and stackable outdoor chairs with three-dimensionally shaped steel sheet seats and backrests. The curved tube frames, similar to those of the Tribeca collection, form the main part of the load-bearing structure. The backrest shell and seat slats complete the stability of the chair by connecting the seat perimeter tube from one side to the other. The backrest is made of a single sheet of steel stamped into a shape that could remind of a comb or rake, whose upward-facing teeth appear as equidistant, parallel vertical slats, similar to those of the seat. The latter are arranged orthogonally to the motif of the backrest.

Feature and future.
The first feature that catches the eye when observing the Coney is the graphic impact given by the repetition of its colored slats. The monomateriality makes it appear as a touch of homogeneous color within the architectural space. The complexity of its geometries is simplified and ennobled thanks to the uniform use of color. Its precise and clear carpentry, almost as if it were an untouched agricultural tool, make it seem like a relic of the future.

En plein air.
The chromatic uniformity, combined with the powerful structural solidity, make the Coney lookt like an object of urban furniture. This characteristic makes it particularly suitable for the most frequently visited outdoor contexts: public parks, bars on the beach or in the square, open-air cinemas and restaurants on the street, hotels with verandas, waiting at the pier and - why not? - Luna Park! In each of these contexts the Coney presents itself with its appearance of a public good, showing how welcoming, egalitarian and inclusive a place can be.

In one fell swoop.
We have designed a three-dimensional backrest obtained by stamping the steel sheet that prevents the accumulation of water, minimizes the welding sections and hides them with the edges of its own ribs. We have studied a single mold from which it is possible to obtain, with modifications to the molding parameters, the backrests of all the items in the series.
As with the backrest, the welding of the seat slats is hidden, making the object appear tidy and solid.
WANDERLUST
Stacked in the middle with you.
“I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair”, sang Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan. The song is track number two of the first album of the same name by Stealers Wheel, released on November 17, 1972. Many years later it became one of the songs on the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino's film Reservoir Dogs. Well, it is said that the title was changed a few days before the recording of the album, replacing the first word with the famous “stuck”, while in the original version it referred to neatly stacked chairs, on which it must have been unlikely to sit without being taken for a clown.
Joe Egan is said to have a real obsession with the stackability of Coney chairs.
